WHAT ABOUT FORMULA STUDENT

Formula Student is the largest engineering competition in the world with the aim of creating better engineers by giving the students hands-on experience. Every competing team designs, manufactures and tests a vehicle with which they then compete against other teams in several different events – all of this takes place during less than one year. There are both dynamic events such as endurance and acceleration, and static events where the cost of manufacturing and the business idea of the project are presented to the judges. Overall, the car and the competitions are the means used to develop our engineering skills.

FORMULA STUDENT

Pre-Study

Pre-Study is a four weeks phase for the team to build up knowledge about the project and decide upon a concept. We set up the goals and rules for the project and set the foundation for the coming year with routines and roles of responsibilities.

FORMULA STUDENT

Design

During the eight weeks long Design phase we dedicate ourselves to 3D modeling, simulations and decision making regarding what components to use. Where all of this will result in a full 3D CAD model of the car.

FORMULA STUDENT

Manufacture

It’s time for the car to step out from the computer and take its final shape and during 15 weeks the team will be milling, welding and spend long nights in the workshop.

FORMULA STUDENT

Testing

When the care is finally completed it is time for eight weeks of testing, redesigning and practice for the competition. It is crucial that the team is well prepared.

FORMULA STUDENT

Competition

The time has come to prove to the world, our selves and future Chalmers Formula Student teams that there is for a reason why we spend all those hours to become one of the top Formula Student teams in the world, and is for us to remember. Everything is worth it.

The Competition is the highlight of the project. It’s the culmination of a year of hard work, design, engineering, manufacturing, and dedication – this is what drives the project. How can you use data and analysis to optimize trade-offs? There is only one way to find out – to meet the other Formula Student teams in a short, intense, and action-filled weekend.

The winner has to prove that they have the best concept of a formula style racing car. To be able to reach that goal, several phases have to be well performed; the pre-study, design, implementation and operation phases.

During the competition, the cars are judged in a series of static and dynamic events. Each event is scored so that the cars can be compared.
